Ten Things to Do on a Day Trip to Capri

Shops & Sights, Mount Solaro & Augustus Gardens, Blue Grotto

Set at the southern end of the Gulf of Naples, the Isle of Capri is an easy day trip from the mainland resorts, the place to shop, spot celebrities and enjoy the views.

Capri is just 20 minutes from Sorrento by fast ferry. The best way to visit for a day is to join an organised tour. It may be more expensive but ferry tickets are guaranteed and once on the island, tourists are quickly transferred to Capri town and Anacapri. Independent visitors have to queue for the funicular up to town or wait for local buses. Taxis are luxurious but expensive.

From shops to sights, there’s a lot to do on a day trip to Capri. Tours allow ample time to take in the main attractions and relax in the Augustus Gardens or on the Piazzetta. Mount Solaro and boat trips to the Blue Grotto and around the island are optional but can be fitted into the day and are well worth the extra cost.

Capri Shops and Sights

  • Head for Via Camerelle in Capri town and wander through boutiques full of designer wear, browse the famous Capri Pants and jewelled sandals, smell the sophisticated fragrance of Carthusia perfumes.
  • Shop for quality souvenirs in the lanes of Capri or the upper town, Anacapri. Look out for limoncello, the refreshing lemon liqueur sold in stylish bottles, ceramics, paintings and lace.
  • See the medieval district in Capri town and St James’ Charterhouse with its luminous cloisters and Baroque clock tower framed in oleander. There are frescoes in the church and paintings and sculptures in the museum.
  • Anacapri has the ruined Barbarossa castle and St Michael’s Church with its stunning majolica floor, one of the greatest masterpieces in the whole of the Campania province.

Day Trip to Capri, Mount Solaro, Augustus Gardens

  • Take the chair lift from Anacapri to Mount Solaro for magnificent views across the island and out to sea. Best time to avoid the queues is during the lunch break. There’s a café on the top.
  • Stroll through the lovely Augustus Gardens, all flower beds, pine trees and palms, a great spot to relax or picnic. The belvedere looks out to the dramatic Faraglioni rocks rising from the water at the southern tip of the east coast.
  • Chill out on Capri’s famous Piazzetta, the place to see and be seen and enjoy the island’s most celebrated panorama over the Gulf of Naples, from Marina Grande to the mainland and Mount Vesuvius.
  • Sample a fresh island salad, tomato and mozzarella or mussel and clam, followed by a delicious Italian ice cream.

Day Trip to Capri, Blue Grotto, Sail around the Island

  • The Blue Grotto is a popular attraction accessed by boat when sea conditions permit. There are long queues in season but inside the cave all is quiet, daylight just filtering through the narrow entrance. Colours are at their best in the morning. Trips depart from Marina Grande, tours or private hire.
  • A worthwhile alternative is to sail around the island, past the Blue Grotto entrance and the Faraglioni rocks, then along the rugged south coast dotted with watch towers and seemingly inaccessible celebrity villas. It’s a wonderful end to a day on Capri. Boats return to Marina Grande and it’s just a few steps back to the ferry.
