Traveling to Italy can be an adventure right down to walking into the hotel room. Certain aspects to Italian accommodations shock some visitors.

A vacation to Italy can easily be dampened when travelers expectations of hotels rooms are not initially met. Knowing what to expect before the head hits that Italian hotel’s pillow will avoid the initial shock or disappointment from travelers when making a trip to Italy.

Italian Hotel Room and Apartment Characteristics

Most hotels in Italy have far from spacious rooms. A bed and desk may be the only furniture in the room, and there may be little space to place luggage and move around. If travelers do not specify that they want a matrimoniale double bed, most likely they will receive the typical doppia bed in Italy. This type is essentially two twin beds pushed together. If visitors do not want to be falling through the crack of the bed, be sure to reserve the matrimoniale.

If travelers decide to go the apartment rental route in Italy, be prepared to take shorter showers. Most apartments in Italy do not allot for long hot showers and will quickly turn ice cold. Also, in most hotel rooms, the shower head will likely resemble that of a hose on the kitchen sink.

The Italian Hotel Star Rating

Generally hotels in Italy will have a one to five star rating. One to two star hotels for the most part do no have attached bathrooms to the guestrooms. Sometimes visitors will have a shared bath with other guests, so it is important to check with the hotel on exactly what type of room it may be.

Three stars in Italy can be somewhat disappointing. They can seemingly be more of two stars, so making sure the price is not too steep is a must. Even a four star hotel may seem more in the three star range for visitors.

Where the Hotel Should Be Located in an Italian Town

Most hotels and apartment rentals in Italy can have good deals on prices. However, generally if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. Three to four star hotels may have ridiculously cheap rates due to their location. Usually the cheapest hotels will be way outside the city center.

It is worth the extra 10 euros a night for convenience to stay in the city centers of Italian towns. Money would otherwise be spent on transportation and maybe Advil for all the headaches.
