Capri isn't the only Italian island worth visiting; although it may not be as well known, Ischia is also a beautiful place to explore.

When most people think of gorgeous and exotic Italian destinations, places like Capri and Amalfi normally come to mind. Ischia isn't the most well known tourist destination, and that is possibly one of its greatest charms. If you're looking for a location that is beautiful, authentic, and not overcrowded with tourists, Ischia is the place for you.

Location

Ischia is an island off the coast of Naples. Unlike Capri, the streets of Ischia are not typically filled with tourists and its shops are not often frequented by celebrities. However, tourists do find their way to Ischia, and after one visit, they usually leave with fond memories and plans to return. The local shops offer a variety of products. Whether you're looking for a souvenir, a new outfit, or a local culinary treasure, you're likely to find what you're looking for.

Food and Drink

Since it is an island, many of the local restaurants in Ischia incorporate delicious fresh seafood into the dishes on their menus. The pizza in Ischia is arguably some of the best you'll find in the entire country. Their limoncello (a liqueur made from local lemons) is also known to be some of the best Italy has to offer.

Sun and Sand

Although the beaches aren't as manicured as other beaches in the Mediterranean, they are still lovely. The water is a beautiful shade of blue and the views from the highest points in Ischia's mountainous terrain are stunning. There are also natural hot springs that are free to the public.

Exploring the Island

The local people of Ischia are often very friendly and hospitable. There are a variety of hotels and hostels that offer reasonable prices for rooms, and getting there is simple- ferries leave from Naples to Ischia several times a day. Local buses make it easy to get around, and taxis are also available. However, exploring the island by foot is also enjoyable, especially when the weather is nice.

Easter in Ischia

If you happen to be in Ischia around Easter, you will probably witness a re-enactment of the Last Supper, followed by the Betrayal, the torture of Christ, and a procession leading up to the Crucifixion. It's a solemn ceremony and the townspeople gather to participate in and watch it. If you've never seen something like this before, it's definitely worth checking out, even if you're not Christian: it's an important part of the Catholic culture.
