Religion, Art, Business and Nature Unite in the Alps above Biella

The Sanctuary of Oropa in Piemonte offers a refuge from everyday life, not only for spiritual reflection, but for cultural edification, business and also for pleasure.

According to tradition the Sanctuary was founded by the Bishop Eusebio in the fourth century. The first written mention of the church, the Chiesa di Santa Maria, dates back to the 13th century, and it became a point of reference for travelers. Over time, the expansion of the complex to it's monumental size, has changed its purpose from being a point in transit, to being the destination.

Sanctuary for Spiritual Devotion

Two churches are open for services, quiet reflection and prayer. The Basilica Antica was erected in place of the old Chiesa di Santa Maria, keeping the old Eusebian chapel intact that was built in the 9th century. Construction began on the imposing Basilica Superiore towards the end of the 1800's but work slowed with the interruption of two world wars. It was finally consecrated in 1960.

Sanctuary for Art and Architecture

The complex itself is a testament to the works of great artists and architects in time. Arduzzi, Beltramo, Bonora, Galletti, Gallo, Guarini, and Juvarra all contributed to the project development during the 17th and 18th centuries. Construction of the Basilica Superiore began in 1885 according to plans drawn up by Galletti, a hundred years earlier.

Frescos dating back to the 4th century can be seen on the walls and cap inside the Basilica Antica (artist unknown). The wooden statue of the Madonna Nera was chiseled out of stone pine in the 13th century by a sculptor from Val d'Aosta, a neighboring region.

An art gallery and museum are also housed on site that contain antique paintings, archeological finds and precious jewels and items of the church. Art exhibitions are also arranged to be on show during the year.

Sanctuary for Nature Lovers

In 2005, the area was declared a natural reserve of the Sacro Monte of Oropa. A Botanical Garden was created over a span of 5 acres displaying many examples of rare alpine flora.

During the summer months, there are a myriad of trails in the area that suit any level of trekker or mountain biker. Fishermen can take the aerial car to Lake Mucrone for sport fishing and snowboarders and skiers in winter take advantage of the incredible riding terrain.

Sanctuary for Travelers

Travelers looking for peace and quiet will love the Sanctuary of Oropa; so will travelers on a budget. Yet, those wanting to mix a nature break with city life will find they are only 15 minutes from Biella. Convent lodging ranges from the very simple to elegant yet all at an affordable price. Thirteen restaurants and cafes clamour for your patronage. They serve the typical food of Piemonte. For more photos of the complex, click the link above.

Sanctuary for Business

The Sanctuary of Oropa has always been a meeting place for various reasons. In keeping with the times, it now offers 2 rooms for meeting and conventions, both equipped with hi-tech mulitimedia equipment and service. A library is situated onsite and for multi-day meetings, rooms are available for over-night stays.

Today the Sanctuary of Oropa offers something for almost every aspect of life. At almost 4,000 feet above sea level, in its early days it was not easily accessible. Today it can be quickly reached from Biella by car or bus. Just hop on the #2 line and you will be delivered almost to the front door.
