Lufthansa Italia, a new airline owned by the German carrier, offers cheap tickets on flights from Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP) to Paris, Barcelona, Brussels, and London.

Lufthansa Italia, a new airline belonging to German carrier Lufthansa, will start flying from Milan Malpensa International Airport (MXP) in February 2009. The first flights will be from Milan (Milano) to Paris and Barcelona with more European destinations, including London, Brussels, and Madrid to follow later in the year. Cheap tickets will be available with deals staring at €99 (US $126), the traditional discount fare for European return flights on Lufthansa.

Lufthansa Italia – a New German Owned Italian Airline

Lufthansa, Germany’s largest airline and one of the most reliable airlines in the world, has for some time indicated that it was planning to start subsidiary operations from the Northern Italian city Milan (Milano). Originally it was expected that flights would be on Air Dolomiti, an Italian regional airline already wholly owned by Lufthansa, but in November 2008 Lufthansa announced that a new company, Lufthansa Italia, will be formed instead.

Lufthansa Italia will be based at Milan Malpensa International Airport (MXP) and will use Airbus A319 planes from Lufthansa’s German subsidiary Eurowings. These airbuses will be configured to seat 138 passengers in business and economy class.

  • Lufthansa’s decision to launch a new airline rather than expand the network of Air Dolomiti is probably to use its own much respected name to win business customers away from Alitalia with its present reputation for frequent strikes and an uncertain future.

Lufthansa Italia will be a full-service airline similar to Lufthansa with free food and drinks offered even on short flights. In contrast to low-cost airlines, Lufthansa Italia flies only to regular main airports and do not charge additionally for luggage or airport counter check-ins.

From early February 2009, Lufthansa Italia will fly from Milan Malpensa (MXP) to Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) and Barcelona (BCN) up to three times per day. From March 2009, flights will be available on Lufthansa Italia from Milan Malpensa (MXP) to Brussels (BRU), Bucharest (OTP), Budapest (BUD), and Madrid (MAD). London Heathrow (LHR) and Lisbon will be added as further destinations in April 2009.

  • A noticeable absentee in the flight schedule is the Milan-Frankfurt route. Lufthansa itself flies around nine times daily between Malpensa and its hub at Frankfurt International Airport (FRA).

Booking Cheap Flights on Lufthansa Italia

Flights on Lufthansa Italia can already be booked with many cheap tickets available at €99 (US $126) for return flights to or from Milan Malpensa. Business travelers will clearly be the preferred customers but leisure and budget travelers will be able to find good deals and cheap tickets too when booking sightseeing and shopping trips to Italy’s fashion capital. Reservations are possible through most outlets and online reservation services that also sell regular Lufthansa tickets.

  • Presently, Lufthansa Italia flights are still listed as being operated by Air Dolomiti but this will presumably change as soon as Lufthansa Italia is formally launched and issued with an Air Operator Certificate (AOC) in Italy.

Milan is the business capital of Northern Italy but it also has many sights worth seeing, including the spectacular Gothic Duomo, while the fashion conscious can buy the latest high fashion at stylish boutiques or at big discounts at numerous local outlet shops.
